On Saturday 28 February 2026 I will have the honor and pleasure to talk about Language and Shame at the Let’s Talk! session organized by Families in Global Transition.

Together with Mathieu Gagnon, Isabelle Min and Marianne Bobaly-Dienes we will share our personal and professional experience and insights into the topic of shame with regards to language use and ability.

Shame as a social construct, relational and learned (!) emerges from perceived judgment, exclusion, or hierarchy. It depends on norms about what counts as “correct,” “educated,” “native,” or “prestigious”.

Shame is a response that we need to identify the causes for in order to approach it in the healthiest possible way. – If you ever felt shame when using your heritage language or any language for that matter, please join our conversation and share your experience with us! There will be plenty of time for Q&A!
